Wayfinding solutions within Denver's RiNo Art District require a strategic approach. The neighborhood is renowned for its mural-lined alleys, with nearly every surface layered in stickers and graffiti tags. Experience has shown that most signage is likely to be tagged, covered in stickers, or even stolen. To address this, we used non-rigid materials and dark backgrounds to deter taggers who prefer a solid surfaces to scrawl on, and many signs are also positioned high out of reach. Additionally, we have embraced the spray-paint culture by using stencils along sidewalks to direct people to retailers.
In addition to traditional wayfinding, I developed a highly-detailed and engaging retailer directory. An isometric-style illustration of the RiNo Art District serves as the base of the map, highlighting key places of interest. The directory is printed on banner material to deter tagging and is displayed in a prominent location, transforming an otherwise unsightly utility access door into a functional artistic feature.
